The Lord's Prayer

Tuesday of the a First Week of Lent

Matthew 6:7-15

Jesus said to his disciples:
“In praying, do not babble like the pagans,
who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them.
Your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “This is how you are to pray:"

The Lord's Prayer is probably the most well-known prayer in all of Christianity.  It's the first prayer most children learn in catechism or Sunday school classes.  Although the words to "The Lord's Prayer" may be different (i.e. debt instead of trespass), the meaning is the same among denominations.

Our Lord invites us to pray and to pray often.  This is why he gave us "The Lord's Prayer" as a starting point!  Over the centuries, other forms of prayer have been introduced:  the Divine Office, the rosary, Lectio Divina, chanting, etc.   Even the charismatic movement encourages a highly active form of prayer.

Praying is easier for some people than others.  I admit I have a hard time praying consistently.  Right now I'm going through a bit of an internal crisis.  Something happened to me at work this week that's so frustrating  I get angry even thinking about it! Let's just put it this way:  Incompetency and lack of care is something I cannot tolerate.  Yet, our world is full of both.   Nothing I can do about the incompetency but bare through the blow and trek onward.  Things usually don't stay in chaos for long.....

Today why don't you take a few moments to pray the "Our Father" in silence.  Think about how God has blessed your life.  Try to bypass the negative thoughts and feelings of heavy burdens and allow Christ to wrap his loving arms around you.  I can't emphasize enough how much God loves each one of us. Prayer is meant as a tool to build up the strength and courage needed to fight the fires of every day life!

Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen!
